Academic Food Supply Veterinary Medicine Committee

 

The Committee shall be a full membership committee appointed by the AAVMC president with nominations made by AAVMC member institution representatives.

 

Committee Vision Statement

To be a committee whose members are dedicated to assessing the current and future educational needs for food supply veterinary medicine with the goal of preparing the highest quality veterinary workforce ready to meet continually changing societal demands for food supply veterinary medicine expertise.
 

Committee Focus

This committee shall provide advice and recommendations to the AAVMC Board of Directors, including:

  • Leading efforts to review, evaluate and improve the academic food supply veterina ry medicine model and curriculum for veterinary medical students, interns, and residents to assure that AAVMC member institutions are meeting the needs of society
  • Identifying and working closely with other AAVMC committees including, but not limited to, the Public Health, Governmental Affairs, Animal Care and Welfare, and Finance Committees to identify and advocate for policies and resources to advance academic food supply veterinary medicine
  • Cultivating veterinary medical students’ interest and proficiency in educational, research, food safety and security, public health, homeland security, economics, regulatory requirements, and workforce issues surrounding food supply veterinary medicine.

Committee Charge

The Committee shall:

  • Research, discuss, debate and provide advice and recommendations to the AAVMC Board of Directors regarding academic food supply veterinary medicine including, but not limited to, educational, research, food safety and security, public health, homeland security, economics, regulatory requirements, curricula, and workforce issues
  • Develop and recommend program content, speakers, and budgets for presentations, workshops, and symposia on subjects related to academic food supply veterinary medicine in consultation with the AAVMC Program Committee
  • Research, develop, and recommend AAVMC Fellowship opportunities for academic food supply veterinary medicine faculty in state and federal government executive branches along with identifying and developing programs for other public policy opportunities and initiatives for faculty
  • Develop a model mentoring and support program for member institutions to implement for students interested in food supply veterinary medicine
  • Work closely with AAVMC staff to identify need and possible public and private resource support for AAVMC member institutions to develop and expand all aspects of academic food supply veterinary medicine
  • Serve as points of contact (members of the committee) at AAVMC member institutions for collaborative activities regarding academic food supply veterinary medicine with national and international organizations
  • Identify and recommend to the AAVMC Board of Directors changes to charges for the committee
  • Submit an annual report of Committee activities to the Board of Directors at the AAVMC Annual Meeting
  • Have the Committee Chair or his/her designee attend when possible at their own expense the AVMA Annual Convention, AASP Annual Meeting, AABP Annual Meeting, AASRP Annual Meeting, AAAP Annual Meeting, and the IAAAM Annual Meeting to report on AAVMC Academic Food Supply Veterinary Medicine activities and to seek advice and input from these stakeholder groups.
  • Have a governance structure that includes a Past-Chair and a Secretary, and the Secretary shall be the AAVMC liaison to the Committee.
  • Add the Academy of Rural Veterinarians, American Veterinary Medical Association, and U.S. Department of Agriculture as non-voting ex-officio members of the Committee and that each respective organization shall appoint that member.
