Important Information About the Deadline Policy!

All of the schools/colleges of veterinary Medicine expect students to submit their application on time.  The Deadline for submission of applications & evaluations is 1:00pm, Eastern Time, October 3rd, 2011. Timely submission of applications materials (application, evaluations, test scores, transcripts, fees, etc..) enables schools to begin the annual application review process promptly, and provides an indication that applicants will follow the numerous expectations of a veterinary medical education. The schools believe that the application cycle of four months is adequate time to complete and submit application materials.

The importance schools place on the application deadline is demonstrated by the numerous deadline notices applicants receive via the VMCAS web and application pages, and reminder notices sent through email and posted on the VMCAS FaceBook page. The application deadline is also posted on each school's website.

The VMCAS application & evaluator portal automatically shut down at 1:00pm, Eastern Time. Although the application & evaluator portals remain accessible, applicants and evaluators will NOT be able to submit any additional data after the shut-down date and time.

Every year, some applicants miss the application deadline.

The VMCAS Deadline Extension Policy explicitly describes the acceptable reasons for considering an extension to the application deadline. Please read the policy carefully!!

The  rare instances in which an extension may be granted include wide-spread/prolonged disruption of services (e.g., U.S. Mail, power, and/or internet) caused by severe natural disasters or other events (such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks). A severe VMCAS operational issue (such as complete crash of the application system) may also lead to an extension for a limited period of time.

Each year, some applicants request deadline extensions that do not meet the guidelines of the deadline extension policy. Reasons given include missing the deadline due to time zone differences, missing evaluation requirements, time differences ("my clock's time is different"), illness, and problems with their computers.  These types of requests are denied by the AAVMC's Admissions Committee.

The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), its Board of Directors, and all its member veterinary medical institutions have approved the following Deadline Extension Policy to provide applicants with clear guidance about when a deadline extension might be rewarded.

VMCAS 2012 Deadline Extension Policy

Deadline extensions are subject entirely to VMCAS' discretion, and will only be granted in cases of severe VMCAS operational issues, natural disasters (e.g. Major Hurricanes), or an act of terrorism which disrupts the U.S. Postal Service. All requests for VMCAS application deadline extensions MUST be submitted in writing (via email: vmcas@aavmc.org) to  VMCAS before 5:00pm, Eastern Time on Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 and must provide detailed reasons for the request. Extension requests are elevated to, and reviewed by the AAVMC Admissions Committee, and outcomes are provided, in writing, to the applicant.
