Dr. Rosanne Taylor

Dr. Rosanne Taylor is dean of the faculty of veterinary science at the University of Sydney in Australia, where she teaches veterinary physiology and cell biology.

After graduating with a veterinary medical degree (
BVSc) from the University of Sydney in 1982, Dr. Taylor completed a large animal internship (Diploma of Veterinary Clinical Studies) and a PhD on the treatment of inherited neurological disease, canine fucosidosis. She implemented animal research legislation as veterinary officer and branch manager at the NSW Animal Welfare Branch of the NSW government. During a Kleberg postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, she demonstrated the potential of neural stem cells and gene therapy in arresting progressive brain disease.

In 1994, she returned to The University of Sydney as an associate lecturer in neuroscience, physiology, animal biotechnology and animal science. In 2001, she completed the graduate certificate in higher education and as chair of the Faculty for Teaching and Learning Committee, implemented a new curriculum.

Awards include: Australian College of Veterinary Sciences Ian Clunies Ross Award in 1999; the Faculty's Pfizer Teaching Award and Grace Mary Mitchell Award in 2001; the Vice Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2002; a national finalist in Australian University Teaching Awards in 2002 and 2003; e-learning team Vice Chancellors Award winner in 2009.

Current research directions with her students include the pathogenesis and treatment of inherited brain damage, genetic studies of canine oncology and atopy and ways to improve veterinary education.

She also serves on the AAVMC’s international and diversity working groups.
