2005
Veterinary Education in Modern Food Systems Workshop
This workshop was held October 27-29, 2005, in Kansas City , MO
, and was sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association,
Bayer Animal Health, the Western Veterinary Conference, the American
Association of Bovine Practitioners and the American Association
of Swine Veterans. We had over 100 registrants, from all across
the country, who attended this three-day workshop, designed to
address how we train the future workforce for the vertically integrated
food systems.
The Planning Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Daryl Buss,
focused the agenda on four general topic areas: 1) demand and
opportunities; 2) supply and retention; 3) identifying and delivering
information essential for tomorrow's food supply and rural practice
veterinarian; and 4) setting a vision and creating plans for the
future.
Featured speakers included Dr. Ron DeHaven ( A Vision of Animal
Health and Food Safety), D r. Daryl Olsen ( Food Supply Veterinarians
in Workforce Education), and Dr. Pamela Ruegg ( Gender Based Issues
in Recruitment and Retention). Additionally, registrants were
twice divided into breakout groups to help brainstorm on topics
such as Centers of Excellence and pre-DVM admissions requirements.
Additionally, the American Farm Bill Task Force recently posted
an article on their website entitled “FB Study Identifies
Agriculture's Future Challenges.” This article's points
resonate well with the conclusions made at the Modern Food Systems
Workshop. The article can be read in its entirety by clicking

We would like to thank all who attended this important meeting,
and we welcome your feedback.
