AAVMC Policy
AAVMC Representation in Development Activities
The Association has been the beneficiary of gifts and grants from industry, government organizations and foundations. Funds from these sources are vital to the operations of the Association. Funds have been used to provide for lecture expenses, The Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, and for unrestricted operating support.
Gifts and grants are not only very important for Association operations and functions, they help to keep membership dues, fees and assessments at reasonable levels. Without such support dues, fees and assessments would be higher, or Association services to members would be reduced or curtailed.
It is important that gifts and grants to the Association be solicited in a professional and organized manner. Furthermore, it is essential that development activity or solicitation of funds, in general be done with approval by the Board of Directors and coordinated by the Executive Director.
The organization of development activities is very important. Coordinated fundraising, through the Executive Director, will obviate duplication of effort and conflicting requests to potential grantors or donors. Lack of coordination could result in embarrassment of the Association due to non-approved solicitation, duplicate solicitation, requests for different purposes or amounts to the same grantor or donor, failure to properly account for an utilize funds and failure to extend appropriate and official expression of gratitude.
The policy of the Association shall be that grant submissions and other donation solicitation will, in general, be done with the approval of the Board and coordinated by the Executive Director. The Executive Director shall have overall responsibilities for development activities. Others may act as key contact persons in specific cases, but no one except the officers, Board of Directors and Executive Director may official represent the Association in development activities.
