SYMPOSIUM ON VETERINARY MEDICAL EDUCATION

I.   Background

Beginning in 1965, the AAVMC and the AVMA Council on Education co-sponsored ten symposia on veterinary medical education. With the exception of the first two, all symposia have been initiated by the AAVMC. AVMA has provided some minimal staff support for planning, and an AVMA staff member has served in an ex-officio capacity with three representatives of AAVMC and three representatives of AVMA-COE. The chair has always been one of the AAVMC representatives. Funding has been through private grants obtained by the symposia chair or funded entirely from registration fees. All symposia have resulted in the publication of the proceedings. The symposium is held in advance of the AAVMC's Annual Meeting on years ending in even numbers.

IVERSON BELL SYMPOSIUM

I.   Background

The symposium is named for Iverson Bell, D.V.M. A graduate of Michigan State University , Dr. Bell practiced small animal medicine in Indiana . He held lecturing posts at Tuskegee and Purdue University and assumed leadership roles at the American Veterinary Medical Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The Multicultural Affairs Committee develops the program and agenda to address the issue of diversity. The Multicultural Affairs Committee also selects the recipient of the Iverson Bell Award, presented to an administrator or faculty member who promotes ethnic and racial diversity in the veterinary medical profession. There have been 14 Iverson Bell Symposiums, with the 15th planned for March 2005. The symposium is held in advance of the AAVMC's Annual Meeting on years ending in odd numbers.
