AAVMC Elects 2013-2014 Officers and Directors

Washington, D.C., July 31, 2013 – Dr. Kent Hoblet, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University, began his term as president of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) at the recent annual meeting of the AAVMC Assembly in Chicago. Dr. Trevor Ames, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota, was elected to the office of president-elect.

“It’s a privilege to have this opportunity to help shape the future of academic veterinary medicine, especially during such a pivotal time of transition and promise,” Dr. Hoblet said. “I look forward to working closely with the many talented and dedicated people who are guiding our profession toward continued success and achievement in the future.”

Dr. Hoblet, who serves as a professor in Mississippi State University’s Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine, has special academic interests in dairy production medicine and veterinary medicine in developing countries. He received his Master of Science degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from The Ohio State University and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM).

In addition to Dr. Hoblet and Dr. Ames, the AAVMC assembly elected Dr. Lisa Nolan, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, as secretary; Dr. Douglas Freeman, dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, as treasurer; Dr. Elizabeth Stone, dean of the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, as at-large director, representing Canadian colleges; and Dr. Robert Dysko, professor of laboratory animal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, as at-large director, representing departments of comparative medicine.  
Dr. Grace Mulcahy, dean of the University College Dublin School of Veterinary Medicine, continues as at-large director for international colleges; Dr. Cyril Clarke, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University, continues as at-large director, representing U.S. colleges; and Dr. David Hardin, head of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, continues as at-large director for departments of veterinary science.

The AAVMC is a nonprofit membership organization working to protect and improve the health and welfare of animals, people and the environment by advancing academic veterinary medicine. Its members include 35 veterinary medical colleges in the United States and Canada, nine departments of veterinary science, eight departments of comparative medicine, thirteen international colleges of veterinary medicine, and three affiliate colleges of veterinary medicine.
