New AAVMC Officers Assume Duties at Annual Assembly

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 12, 2014 – Dr. Trevor Ames, dean of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, began his term as president of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) during the organization’s annual business meeting held on July 28, 2014 in Denver.

“I view this opportunity to serve as a tremendous honor and I’m looking forward to an exciting year,” said Ames. “Our colleges and the profession are dealing with a variety of important issues, but I think our stakeholders share a great sense of common purpose and we’re going to make a lot of progress in creating a better future for veterinary medicine.”

Ames earned his DVM in 1978 from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and his M.S. in 1981 from the University of Minnesota. He is a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). His academic interests lie in large animal internal medicine and infectious diseases of horses and cattle.

Dr. Eleanor M. Green, the Carl B. King Dean of Veterinary Medicine at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, is the association’s new president-elect.

Former president Dr. Kent Hoblet, dean of the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, assumes the duties of past-president.

Other recently elected AAVMC officers include:
  • Dr. Michael Lairmore, dean of the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine: at-large director representing U.S. colleges
  • Dr. David Argyle, professor and head of The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Students at the University of Edinburgh: at-large director representing International colleges
  • Dr. Sandra Bushmich, professor of pathology and veterinary science at the University of Connecticut: at-large director representing departments of veterinary science (reinstated)
Remaining members of the board for the 2014-15 year include:
  • Dr. Lisa Nolan, dean, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine: secretary
  • Dr. Douglas Freeman, dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan: treasurer
  • Dr. Elizabeth Stone, dean of the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph: at-large director representing Canadian colleges
  • Dr. Robert Dysko, professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School: at-large director representing departments of comparative medicine
  • Mr. Tony Nitido, a DVM student at the Western University of Health Sciences: at-large SAVMA liaison
  • A vacancy remains for the at-large APLU liaison position
  • Dr. Andrew T. Maccabe, executive director, AAVMC, (non-voting)
