Dr. Dana Zimmel

At-Large Director, Region I (U.S., Mexico, Caribbean)

Dr. Dana Zimmel is dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at the University of Florida, where she has served since 2021.

Her clinical expertise comprises equine internal medicine, neonatology and sport horse medicine.

Dr. Zimmel worked in private equine practice in Ocala, Florida and the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She joined UF in 2002, working in equine extension and large animal internal medicine. She became chief of staff of the UF Veterinary Hospitals in 2010 and held that position until her appointment to the associate dean role in 2015. Under her leadership, the hospital caseload has grown from 20,542 patients in 2011 to 41,811 patients seen in 2019. In 2012, Dr. Zimmel spearheaded creating UF Pet Emergency Treatment Services, an emergency satellite hospital forging the first public-private enterprise with local-area veterinarians.

She has been the president of the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, served on the board of directors of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and founding member and chair of Veterinary Management Group-20 (Equine Academic Group), Veterinary Management Group-30 (Small Animal Academic Group) and the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners.

She earned both her BS in Animal Sciences and her DVM from the University of Florida. She is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
