Dr. Callanan is a board-certified veterinary pathologist and dean of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to his appointment as dean in 2016, Dr. Callanan served as professor of veterinary pathology, director of postgraduate studies, and head of both the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Center for Integrative Mammalian Research.
His research interests include neuropathology, neuroscience, the blood brain barrier and natural and experimental disease models.
He has served as president of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (2013-2015), president and member of the examination committee of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (2004-2010), and as a member of the Specialist Advisory for the Royal College of Pathologists (London). He is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.
Following graduation from the School of Veterinary Medicine at University College Dublin (UCD) in 1987, he undertook internships at UCD and then at the University of Glasgow. This was followed by a combined PhD and residency program at the University of Glasgow, where he was awarded his PhD in 1994 for studies on feline immunodeficiency virus and earned membership in the Royal College of Pathologists in 1996.
After working as a toxicological pathologist at Sanofi Winthrop (Alnwick, UK), he returned to Ireland, initially as a research officer in the Department of Agriculture and then as a lecturer in the School of Veterinary Medicine, UCD. During 15 years at UCD he progressed to associate professor and was Head of Department.
He is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists, a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, and holds Radiology Certification from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
