Washington, D.C. – Dr. Larry G. Adams of the Purdue University School of Veterinary has been chosen by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) to receive the 2009 Pfizer National Teaching Award, the most prestigious teaching award in veterinary medicine in the United States. The award will be presented at the AAVMC annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, March 13, 2010.
Dr. Adams is Professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Auburn University in 1984, and his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1991. After serving a small animal internship, Dr. Adams was in private practice before becoming a Clinical Resident at the University of Minnesota in 1986. He joined Purdue University in 1991, reaching the rank of Professor in 2008. Dr. Adams has received numerous awards and honors for his teaching, including the MSD AgVet Award for Creativity in Teaching, the Plue Outstanding Teacher Award, the Excellence 21 Special Recognition Award from the President of Purdue University, the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award, and the Purdue University SVM Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award. He was Purdue University’s Norden-Pfizer Teacher of the Year in 1997, 2005, and 2009, and was inducted into the Purdue University Teaching Academy in 2006. Dr. Adams is a member of a number of academic, professional, and scholarly societies, and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Dr. Adams maximizes student learning by actively engaging them in the problem-based learning process. A guiding principle is to tie clinical case material to basic sciences. He often give students responsibility for their cases in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), letting them make case decisions. He is extremely effective at instilling confidence in students. His goal is to educate, mentor, and coach entry-level veterinarians able to enter private practice, and he is consistently recognized by students as one of the top teachers in the Purdue University veterinary school. Dr. Adams also has a major role in the training of interns and residents in the VTH, and was one of the leaders of the school’s DVM curriculum revision that occurred in the mid-1990s.
Dr. Adams is a true national leader in distinguished teaching and optimizing the learning experience, and AAVMC, in collaboration with Pfizer, is most pleased to honor Dr. Adams with this award.
The Pfizer National Teaching Award (formerly the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award) is presented annually to a faculty member at each college or school of veterinary medicine in the United States. It is the most prestigious teaching award in Veterinary Medicine. Since 1963, the award has been sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health. The company donates more than $1.5 million each year to veterinary colleges in the form of scholarships, research grants and products as part of its commitment to the future of veterinary profession and educational mission of veterinary colleges. Award nominees are selected by their individual colleges, while a selection committee at the AAVMC chooses the national honoree.
