Washington, D.C., November 13, 2012 – The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) is accepting applications for the recently established Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship. The $6,000 award recognizes veterinary students who have demonstrated exemplary promise as future leaders and have made significant contributions to enhancing diversity and inclusion in academic veterinary medicine.
This scholarship honors individuals who have consistently championed efforts to address inequities and underrepresentation in the veterinary profession, have advocated for social justice, and have advanced initiatives to value diversity and inclusion within U.S. colleges of veterinary medicine. Plans are to award the scholarship biennially in the form of a one-time payment during years when the AAVMC hosts the Iverson Bell Symposium, which honors Dr. Bell as a leader who made significant contributions to the promotion of diversity and the inclusion of underrepresented veterinary minorities in academic veterinary medicine.
To be eligible for this award, veterinary students must:
- Be a current second-, third-, or fourth-year student in good academic and professional standing at one of the 28 accredited American colleges/schools of veterinary medicine
- Have a demonstrated record of enhancing diversity and inclusion through course projects, co-curricular activities, outreach, domestic and community engagement, and research, and/or developed an early reputation for influencing others to be inclusive.
