At-Large Director, Region II (Canadian Colleges)
Dr. Wichtel is the dean of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), at the University of Guelph, where he has served since 2015. He has taught at Iowa State University, North Carolina State University, Massey University, and University of Prince Edward Island. Before becoming OVC’s dean, he served at different times as department chair, director of animal resources, chair of the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre, and associate dean of graduate studies and research at the Atlantic Veterinary College.
Dr. Wichtel has particular expertise in ruminant management and health. He has attracted more than $2.5 million in grant and contract funding as a principal or collaborating investigator and has written more than 150 publications on animal nutrition, reproduction and disease, livestock production and veterinary education.
Dr. Wichtel has engaged in international development work in Haiti and Kenya and he is passionate about veterinary medicine and one health, and the roles they can play in improving the health of people, animals and the planet.
He obtained his BVSc and PhD degrees from Massey University in New Zealand and is board-certified by the American College of Theriogenologists.
